Yacht wedding venues work differently from ballrooms: the room is the same, but the view changes with the destination. In Mexico the practical differences come down to three things — how sheltered the bay is, how far the marina sits from your hotels, and what season your date falls in. Below, the ten destinations we operate in, compared on exactly that.
If you want to see boats and dates first, start with our yacht rentals in Mexico. If you are still choosing a destination, read on.
How to compare yacht wedding venues
Start with the water, not the boat. A sheltered bay keeps the deck steady, which decides whether guests can stand during the ceremony or need to be seated. Open coastline looks dramatic in photos but moves more.
Then check the transfer. Some marinas sit fifteen minutes from the hotel zone and others take an hour, and that difference shows up in your timeline twice: going out and coming back.
Finally, look at the season. Hurricane season on the Caribbean side runs roughly June through November, so most couples book December through May. The Pacific follows a similar rhythm, although conditions vary bay by bay.
The ten destinations, compared
| Destination | Water | Best known for |
|---|---|---|
| Huatulco | Very sheltered | Nine enclosed bays, the calmest water we operate in |
| La Paz | Sheltered | Clear water of the Gulf of California |
| Cancún | Sheltered | Caribbean color and the short run to Isla Mujeres |
| Puerto Vallarta | Sheltered bay | Green mountains meeting the water at sunset |
| Los Cabos | More open | The Arch as a backdrop; the most photographed |
| Mazatlán | Sheltered | Short transfers and three islands close in |
| Playa del Carmen | Sheltered | Cozumel channel and reef stops |
| Acapulco | Very sheltered | A classic closed bay, dramatic at night |
| Nuevo Vallarta | Sheltered | Marina access and Riviera Nayarit beaches |
| Ixtapa | Sheltered | Quieter, fewer boats on the water |
Which yacht wedding venues suit your guest count
Capacity depends on the specific vessel and on the rules of its departure port, so there is no universal number. The authorized capacity appears on each boat’s listing.
As a rule of thumb, a catamaran carries a standing ceremony best because its deck is flat and wide. A motor yacht suits smaller, more formal weddings with an interior salon and restrooms. A sailboat photographs beautifully but fits very few people.
Book the boat first and finalize the guest list afterwards. Doing it the other way around usually ends in last-minute cuts.
What a charter includes
The base charter covers the vessel with captain and crew, fuel and onboard equipment. Beyond that you add catering, bar service, floral decor, music and photography, so the day is assembled piece by piece rather than sold as a fixed package.
One item to settle early: onboard ceremonies in Mexico are typically symbolic, with the civil signing completed ashore, and the rules vary by state. Our guide on planning a yacht wedding covers that in more detail.
Questions worth asking any venue
- What happens if weather forces a reschedule, and on what terms?
- When does setup access to the dock begin, and when does it end?
- Does the stated capacity include crew and vendors?
- Can we bring our own catering, or is there a required supplier?
- How is boarding handled, thinking about long dresses and heels?
Those five answers decide the booking more often than price does.
Yacht wedding venues FAQ
Which destination has the calmest water?
Huatulco, because its nine bays are enclosed and break the swell before it reaches you. That matters if you want guests standing during the ceremony.
When is the best time of year?
December through May for most destinations, which falls outside hurricane season. Those dates also book out first.
Can we hold the ceremony and the reception on the same boat?
Yes, and it is the usual format. The deck is reset between the ceremony and the toast, so decor should be easy to move.
Is the ceremony legally binding?
Usually not on its own. Most onboard weddings in Mexico are symbolic and the civil registration happens on land. Confirm before setting the date.
